Chapter 2 — The Judgment of Imminent Drama
Breton winter crushes the moor. The mist stretches, vast sheet without contour. On the Crozon peninsula, the Keraudren line tightens. Dense. Opaque.
The ancient dwelling resists. Cracked walls. Tenacious framework. The wind strikes relentlessly. The shutters slam. Unspoken tales circulate in the salty air.
Around, the great families watch.
The door opens abruptly.
Hélène emerges. Margot follows closely. Sharp gazes. Ragged breath. A lightning intelligence crosses their gestures. Nothing hesitant. Everything analyzed.
They stop dead.
François and Loïc stand on the threshold.
A sharp silence settles.
"Who are you?" Hélène calls out.
Firm tone. No trembling.
"We've come for the farm," François replies. "Sent by our fathers," Loïc adds.
Margot exchanges a quick glance with her sister. Immediate understanding. Discreet calculation.
"Come in," she decides.
No welcome. No refusal. Just a decision.
They cross the threshold.
The interior breathes tension. Dark wood. Cold air. A table cluttered with papers. Open registers. Annotated. Classified.
Hélène points to a chair.
"Sit down."
She remains standing. Margot too.
"Do you know why you've come?" she asks.
François hesitates.
"Not entirely." "Then listen," Margot cuts in.
She places a sheet on the table.
"No emancipation request filed." "No guardian designated," Hélène continues. "Yet, procedures launched without our knowledge."
Their gazes pierce through.
"Who acts behind your fathers?" Margot asks.
Loïc takes out the document he found. Places it down.
Hélène seizes it. Quick reading. Precise.
"'Placement… identity preserved…'" she murmurs.
Margot closes her eyes for a moment.
"So, confirmation."
A silence falls. Denser.
"We depend on no one," Hélène resumes. "And no one decides for us," Margot adds.
The wind howls against the walls.
Then everything shifts.
A sharp impact against a window. The glass vibrates.
A footstep echoes in the corridor. Slow. Controlled.
The four gazes converge.
The door creaks. A silhouette inscribes itself in the trembling light.
Altered face. Indistinct features.
A voice falls.
"The judgment begins."
No one moves.
The stranger advances one step. A sealed envelope between his fingers.
"Here lies the name of the traitor to your lineage."
The air tightens. Cutting.
Margot mo
ves forward. Short breath. Fixed gaze.
She seizes the envelope.
Hélène stands ready. In support. Vigilant.
"Open it," she says.
An order. Not a request.
The seal yields. The paper rustles.
The words appear.
Time suspends its course.
A name.
Black. Clear. Irrefutable.
Margot's gaze wavers. A shock crosses her features.
"No…"
Hélène almost tears the sheet away. Lightning reading.
Her face pales.
"Impossible…"
Outside, the wind intensifies. The walls tremble.
The stranger steps back. His shadow stretches.
"Truth demands a price," he murmurs.
A flash lacerates the room. Thunder explodes.
The light returns.
Nothing more.
No presence. No trace.
The envelope slides to the floor. A dark stain spreads across it.
Ink… or blood.
In the distance, a bell tolls.
Once. Twice. Three times. Four times.
Each beat engraves a stage.
Hélène raises her head. Hard gaze.
Margot clutches the document.
François and Loïc exchange a brief sign.
The judgment engages. A struggle approaches.
No simple outcome.
Their world tilts.
