Chapter 8 — The Tears and the Oaths
The corridor plunges into darkness.
The wood creaks under restrained steps.
Margot advances. Hélène emerges at the corner. Their gazes meet.
A sound freezes them.
Sobs. Stifled. Broken.
They exchange a sign. No words.
Two doors. Two shattered breaths.
Hélène pushes the first. Margot the second.
François sits. Back bent. Hands clenched.
He does not raise his head.
"Camaret…" he murmurs.
The images return. Boots. Cries. Flight. Fire in the distance.
Hélène approaches slowly. Places a hand on his shoulder.
He startles. Then yields.
"Everything remains there," he says. "Nothing erases."
Hélène kneels before him. Firm gaze. Gentle.
"You still hold on."
A silence.
"Stay here," she adds.
A simple invitation. Without detour.
In the other room, Loïc paces. Wall to wall.
Short breath. Lost gaze.
Margot closes the door. Advances.
"Look at me."
He hesitates. Then obeys.
"We've seen too quickly," he says. "Too intensely."
His voice trembles.
"War crushes everything."
Margot does not look away.
"Not us."
She approaches further.
"Stay."
One word. Sufficient.
Loïc closes his eyes. Then nods.
In the house, voices join. Fragments assemble.
François finally speaks. Choppy. Precise.
"May 10. Offensive." "June 22. Armistice. Brutal end."
Loïc continues.
"And there… Martinique cut off."
Words circulate between them.
"Blockade." "Shortages." "Total control."
Hélène listens. Margot too.
"A harsh power imposes itself," says François. "Censorship. Surveillance. Repression."
Loïc clenches his fists.
"Even celebrations disappear." "Even voices."
A heavy silence.
"Young people flee," he adds. "Clandestine crossings. Commitment elsewhere."
François raises his head.
"An entire island under constraint."
Hélène meets his gaze.
"And you?"
The question suspends the air.
"Do you miss Martinique?"
A moment.
"Do you want to return?"
The wind strikes the window.
"A ship remains possible…" "The Émile Bertin."
François stares at the floor. Then responds.
"Yes. I miss it."
A breath.
"But fleeing solves nothing."
Hélène does not move.
"Then tell me about yourself."
Silence.
"What you expect."
She enumerates.
"Fortune?" "Love?" "A stable life?" "A single woman?" "Worthy work?"
François raises his eyes.
"Fortune, no." "Too fragile. Too cold."
A moment.
"Love… yes."
His voice settles.
"One only. Lasting."
Hélène remains motionless.
"One woman, only one." "No betrayal."
The fire crackles softly.
"A family, perhaps." "If the world still stands."
A breath.
"Useful work." "Not domination."
Silence.
"A just place."
Hélène holds his gaze.
Nothing trembles.
In the other room, Margot listens to Loïc.
"And you?" she asks.
He reflects. Then decides.
"Refuse the imposed inheritance." "Understand. Act."
A moment.
"And stay."
He looks at her.
"Here."
Margot does not look away.
In the corridor, doors remain open. Voices circulate freely.
War advances. The world wavers.
But in the house, something else is born.
Fragile. Tenacious.
Trust.
And beneath still-warm ashes, a silent promise grows.
The wind intensifies. The house groans.
In the corridor, footsteps approach. Four presences now.
The same fatigue. The same shock.
Janine appears at the threshold. François Le Goff behind her. Lucid gazes. Calm.
"Enough for tonight," she says.
But no one moves.
François keeps his eyes fixed on Hélène. Loïc on Margot.
A bond anchors itself.
François Le Goff advances. Measured voice.
"War doesn't ask your age." "But it will exploit every weakness."
A silence.
"So hold on."
Simple. Clear.
Loïc nods slowly. François too.
Hélène straightens. Wipes her tears.
"We yield nothing."
Margot crosses her arms.
"Nothing."
Janine observes. A gleam passes in her gaze.
"Then build."
She points to the table in the back.
"Information. Connections. Method."
François breathes.
"Martinique under control." "Brittany occupied."
Loïc continues.
"Two fronts. One logic."
Hélène thinks quickly.
"Surveillance. Isolation. Fear."
Margot decides.
"But also resistance."
A moment.
Gazes cross. A silent agreement circulates.
François de Monclair advances one step.
"Our fathers hold keys."
He clenches his jaw.
"We must understand how."
François Le Goff nods.
"Ancient networks." "Hidden alliances."
Janine adds:
"And crossed interests."
The word remains suspended.
Interests.
Loïc squeezes Margot's hand. Tighter.
"Then we search there."
Hélène observes François.
"Together."
He nods.
Night stretches.
In each room, a presence remains. No isolation.
François lies on the floor. Hélène stays awake.
Their gazes meet again.
Nothing is said.
But everything advances.
In the other room, Loïc sits near the wall. Margot stays close.
"Are you sleeping?" she asks.
"Not yet."
A breath.
"Stay."
She does not respond. Does not leave.
The house holds.
Outside, war approaches. Inside, a line is drawn.
Fragile. But real.
And in the darkness, without excessive promise, their destinies continue to intertwine.
